Don´t open the harddrive

Never open a hard drive yourself - especially if you don´t have a clean room. At the best it will make the job harder for the data recovery technician trying to save the situation - and you will get an unnecessasary high bill for the job. At the worst the chance of a data recovery will be destroyed completely.

Opening the hard drive and trying to "push the arm to move" or attempting to replace parts in it with simple hand tools is everything but smart. The chance of success is zero since the margin of error is microscopical in a modern hard drive. Misplacements of hundreds of millimeters are enough to destroy the delicate balance between the different parts inside of the hard drive - and the surfaces of the magnetic data storage platters are very sensitive for disturbances.

Particles that comes in from the surrounding air, smaller than the eye can see, can cause violent crashes on a micro level between the platters and the reading heads if the hard disk is powered up after it has been opened in an ordinary room. This can lead to severe damage on the platters and deformation of the heads.

The image on top shows an example where a client had opened the hard drive in an ordinary room and switched parts in it without any prior knowledge and without proper instruments or tools. The client could not see himself that he had caused any damage, but he had actually left fat in the form of fingerprints, scratches and particles that had got stuck to the surface of the platters. The possibility to save data from this hard drive was completely lost because of that.

The mechanism for reading and writing to the platters needed to be replaced. But thanks to the damage the client himself had caused to the platters inside the hard drive it would be meaningless to perform this operation. That´s because the reading heads will immediately crash on the slightest unevenness on the platters surface. The platters spin at a speed of over 400 kilometers per hour and the reading heads flow on a thin air cushion of only about one thousand of a millimeter. If you drive in a car in that speed on a highway and a rock suddenly comes up - it will be a devastating crash. Never restart the hard drive if you have opened it outside of a clean room.

You should never touch the platters inside of a hard drive with your fingers or even with protective gloves. You should not poke with your fingers on the reading arm, nor should you remove any screws belonging to the reading/writing mechanism or try to manipulate with the magnet etcetera. You need a particle free clean room class m100, the right instruments, advanced tools for surgical operations on a micro level, high skills, long experience and exactly the right spare parts to succeed. Would you try to replace a camshaft on a new BMW with a hammer and a screwdriver. Forget about it.
